What is a Resumé?
A resumé is a document that summarizes work experience, education, skills and achievements for a prospective employer. It is usually required as part of a job application, and is considered essential information in order for an employer to assess whether an applicant would be a suitable candidate for a first-round interview.  It is recommended that a resumé be no more than two pages.  Examples of resumés: https://www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/jobs-and-careers/applying-for-a-job/what-is-a-resume/sample-resumes.

The resumes included in the link above are designed to focus on a marketing statement that focuses on what the applicant brings to the job:
  • What achievements and key skills (both academically and professionally) are demonstrated by professional work experience
  • Educational achievements that demonstrate academic capabilities
  • Volunteer work highlighting character and personal attributes that would help the applicant transition into paid employment
  • Work experience completed while studying
  • Any casual, part-time or full-time work experience, including the contributions and achievements made on those jobs.

Other things you can put on your resumé include:
  • Written testimonials or reference statements that support the capabilities and skills
  • Key achievements that demonstrate personal or professional achievements (if relevant to the job)
  • Sporting or community club participation that shows honesty, reliability, motivation and dedication.

What is a Resumé Cover Letter?
The Cover Letter is a tool to help introduce the applicant in a memorable, personal way during a job application.  A well-crafted cover letter goes over information on your resumé and expands this information for the reader, taking them on a guided journey of some of your greatest career and life achievements.

Examples of Cover Letters: https://www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/jobs-and-careers/applying-for-a-job/what-is-a-cover-letter/sample-cover-letters
  • The traditional letter formatting
  • An address to the reader directly (e.g., "Dear Mr. Moyle" - try to avoid using "To whom it may concern" if you can)
  • An opening statement that briefly introduces you to the reader
  • A main body that highlights qualities and characteristics you have that are relevant to the job
  • A closing paragraph asking to arrange an interview
  • A professional signature at the end of the document
  • If the cover letter and/or resume is requested by email, remember to always send emails from a professional-looking email address (e.g., [email protected], NOT [email protected])

Other things you can mention in your cover letter include:
  • General skills that help you work in a team and as part of an organization
  • Personal attributes that will help you learn to work in a professional work environment
  • Key strengths and contributions that show you are a stand-out applicant
  • School work experience or volunteer work that demonstrates your strengths and attributes
  • Any sporting or community club participation (if relevant)
  • Any hobbies or interests that are relevant to the job or demonstrate your professional experience

Key points of this cover letter:
  • Introduces you to the reader
  •  Responds to the requirements of the job
  • Attracts the reader's interest and refers them to your resume
  • Doesn't include too many “I” statements, which can run the risk of disengaging the reader

The focus of this kind of cover letter is to prove that you're able to meet the requirements of the job and make a positive contribution to the organization or business.
